Considering a field in the military? Thinking about how you will finance your medical education?
I just completed 7.5 years as an Active Duty Officer in the field of pediatrics. During your military career, you will serve 1 year per year of scholarship. (Of note, your residency does not count towards your active duty service). If your residency is longer than medical school (4 years), then you could add extra pay-back time in your military career.
I actually interviewed a recruiter in the Navy and Army for the Health Professions Scholarship Program. I did contact the Air Force but was contacted back after I signed with the United States Army.
None of these views are the opinion of the U. S. Army.
I actually really enjoyed my time in service. I'm thankful for my experiences, opportunities especially leadership, amazing pediatric residency training, and of course ZERO Debt.
Of course with anything, there will be ups and downs! I definitely had more UPS than downs but at the end, it was time to exit and move on to civilian practice. I am forever grateful. I may return as a GS or contractor at an military treatment facility (MTF) in the future...who knows.
Have a great day!
Remember: This is your journey, not your final production.
